Furnishing a House You Just Built
In short
How to furnish a new house without it reading as a showroom: start from the three pieces you already own and love, arrange each room in relation to those, and finish to about ninety per cent rather than one hundred so there is somewhere left to go. Art comes last and should be unmistakably the owner's — we advise on it rather than supplying it.

Anchor pieces first
A dining table, a sofa, one thing inherited. Arrange the room in relation to those and the scheme has a reason to look the way it does.
Leave room to add
A house finished to one hundred per cent on handover day has nowhere to go. Ninety is a better target.
Art last, and yours
We advise on art rather than supplying it. It should be the part of the house that is unmistakably the owner's.
Key takeaways
- Plan around three pieces you already love.
- Finish to ninety per cent, not one hundred.
- Art should be yours, not the designer's.
